Watch this video to see how amazing people are…

Stanmore RNOH (the NHS Royal National Orthapaedic Hospital) is the top hospital and research center in the UK, and one of the top in the world, for everything dealing with muscles, skeletons, joints, spines and nerves.

A friend of mine had her hip replaced at Stanmore two years ago (when she was 80!) and she volunteers at Stanmore every Tuesday as a way of giving back.

She spends the day on the spinal injury ward, offering art therapy to those who want it, or sitting and talking with those who don’t.

Some patients were in terrible accidents, or were the victims of crimes that left their worlds shattered and turned upside down. Some had silly falls that went terribly wrong. Some have other problems — like a cancer diagnoses or family tragedy — to face at the same time they are learning to navigate the world with 2, 3, or even 4 arms and legs that don’t work any more.

My friend is always amazed, inspired, touched and humbled by the stories she hears, the changes patients are able to make, and by the care and effort of the staff, doctors and nurses.

This is not a story from Stanmore, but it could be…

Be well,
Andrew
